Eco-Drive is the reason many people buy a Citizen rather than anything else, and it is also the feature most often misunderstood. It is not a solar panel stuck on a dial, and it is not a rechargeable gadget you plug in. Here is what it actually is and whether it is worth the extra money in Pakistan.
How Eco-Drive works
Underneath the dial sits a light-sensitive cell. Any light charges it: sunlight through a window, a tube light in an office, the lamp on your desk. That charge is stored in a rechargeable cell inside the case, and the watch runs from it. There is no disposable battery anywhere in the watch.
The dial itself is designed to let light through while still looking like an ordinary watch face, which is why an Eco-Drive does not look like a solar watch.
Why it matters here specifically
A normal quartz watch needs a battery change every two to three years. That means finding a watch repairer you trust to open the case back, reseal it correctly and not scratch anything. Get it wrong and the water resistance is gone. Eco-Drive removes that decision entirely for the life of the watch.
What happens if you do not wear it
A fully charged Eco-Drive typically keeps running for months in complete darkness. If it does stop, you leave it near a window for a day and it restarts. There is nothing to reset beyond the time, and no damage from letting it run down.
Is it worth the price difference?
Our Eco-Drive range runs Rs 44,000 to Rs 106,000 across 39 models, with the middle around Rs 70,500. Citizen quartz for men starts lower, at Rs 25,500. So you are paying a real premium.
It is worth it if this will be your daily watch for years. Over a decade you avoid four or five battery changes and the risk each one carries. It is less compelling if you rotate between several watches, in which case Citizen quartz makes more sense.
Eco-Drive or automatic?
An automatic also needs no battery, but it winds from wrist movement, stops after about two days in a drawer, and gains or loses a few seconds a day. Eco-Drive keeps quartz accuracy and does not care how often you wear it. Automatics appeal to people who want a mechanical watch; Eco-Drive appeals to people who want no maintenance.
